Tumblr is a social media website that was first created in 2007 by David Karp. Often depicted as a microblog, this website allows users to create an account and post anything from text, short stories, photos, videos, or even audio clips. Karp wanted something more free form compared to standard blogs, so he created Tumblr which has amassed millions of users over the years.

When I first started my Tumblr accou n t, I did not care about followers at all. But when I did some research on how to grow my account, I started to gain hundreds of followers a day. My first ever blog was a fan account for a band, which gained 300 followers over a few months. Eventually I felt bored with what I was posting about, so I decided to make another blog which is possible on Tumblr easy-to-use interface. So, I created a new blog titled Greeny Forest, which I would post green themed photos of nature. Over a month I had gained the 300 followers, I was surprised and excited with this new growth. Today with only 74 posts I have exactly 9,018 followers, compared to my fan account which had 63 posts with only 347 followers. Enough with this nonsense, you click for a reason and you want to grow you blog, so here are the five steps I would recommend to grow as fast as possible.

5 Step Guide to Success:

  1. Pick a broad niche

As we could see with the two blogs I had, I posted and spent so much time on the first account, yet the followers were not coming back. This is because the 'niche' (meaning specific topic of posts) I chose was very specific, if people did not know the band then they did not care. My second blog was the exact opposite, who doesn't like nature? Since my niche was so broad anyone could follow without any background information. As long as aesthetic nature photos show up in my followers feed, they are happy.

2. Use hashtags

This one can seem obvious but not everyone does this, using hashtags can allow your posts to reach thousands without any followers. Having 10 followers and just using hashtags alone made it possible for my fifth post to get 450 notes. Now which hashtags should you use? This is simple when thinking of your blog what comes to mind first, use those as hashtags, as well as what would you look up to find posts similar to yours? Using my blog as an example I use the hashtags nature, green, aesthetic, beautiful, and more.

3. NO REBLOGS well maybe some

Rebloging does not get your blog in anyone's feed except your own. When you have little followers, rebloging only helps the account who actually posted the photos. When somebody reblogs a post anyone who follows that person will now interact with that account; this does not let you have any of the engagement. This means when you do first start your account you need to make sure you are posting your own photos more than reblogging others. A good rule to have is keeping it a ratio of 3:1 one reblog for every post.

4. Post 3–4 times a day at the start

Posting frequently at the beginning will give you the best chance for gaining quickly. The more photos you post the more people will be able to seem this resulting in more followers. While you do want to post multiple times, a day make sure to space them out at least a hour apart to make sure each post has a chance to become popular under a specific hashtag.

5. Watch as your followers grow

While these steps will help you gain followers quicker than normal, you will not gain 10,000 followers overnight, that just is not possible. My blog has been up for around 6 months now and I still haven't hit that mark, one day I will but this takes time. Some posts will do better than others, obviously, so don't get discouraged when your last 5 posts or however many don't get as many notes as you want. As long as you post frequently and have good content you will get the results you want but know this takes time.

Here is a screenshot of my follower count if you don't believe me, because there are going to be those few. I wish the best of luck to your journey, and just remember to have fun while doing it because otherwise what is the point. On a final note, Tumblr is a place where people go to relax, it's not like any other social media website; follower count don't necessarily matter, and this is just what I have learned along my journey.
