If yous have come across this commodity, y'all are (hopefully) interested in this new phenomenon known as FPV flight. The world of FPV is a world full of possibilities and once you get past the sometimes frustrating process of edifice/flying an FPV drone for the first time, the advantages far outweigh theses frustrations. This short article takes the beginner through the main aspects of FPV flight and a drone in general and sets you up with a good knowledge base from which you tin build (literally…).

What is FPV?

So first things start, FPV stands for Kickoff-Person-View. In brusque, you put a camera on a flight drone, yous receive the live feed from this photographic camera via a pair of goggles (or monitor) and you lot fly the drone via this live feed. FPV offers you the adventure to run into your globe from a bird-eye view – information technology'south a whole new vantage signal of which you but can't get enough! Outside of beingness a real pilot, this is the about immersive flying experience y'all will encounter and I cannot promote it more. You lot feel as if you are physically inside the drone, as though y'all were a bird, racing by copse, and performing and loops through the air…although, of course, you accept your anxiety firmly on the ground.

There are three main types of FPV flying; freestyle, racing, and photography, each of which are explained below.

FPV Freestyle

This is the type of FPV flying you volition have most likely come across before if y'all have watched whatsoever FPV flight on YouTube. It is flying with no restrictions of where you lot have to fly; y'all tin fly depression, you can fly high and you can explore any new exciting place that you find. This is the arena in which you can perform tricks and flips and impress any onlookers with your skills! The freestylists are the acrobats of the drone world and don't appreciate beingness held dorsum by such things every bit race courses, copse or buildings… Freestyle is all about finding the best lines through and around obstacles while throwing a few flips to expect slap-up for YouTube videos.

FPV Racing

No prizes for guessing this one – this is where a grouping of FPV pilots go together and race their drones. There will be a race class of some kind featuring a mix of both natural and man-made obstacle (e.chiliad. copse, gates and flags). Whoever finished starting time wins. This isn't necessarily all nigh speed and power but really tests your reflexes and manoeuvrability. Neat precision is needed here…

Aerial Photography

Again, this is exactly what information technology says on the tin – this is the art of taking photos and videos from that birds-eye perspective we spoke near earlier. The technology used in drones has enabled this easy access to the skies and and then now ordinary folk like y'all and me can take in the stunning scenery from on loftier. The type of drone and equipment used in this type of flight are quite different from freestyle and racing. Here, smoothen and like shooting fish in a barrel flying take precedent over speed and agility as polish footage is essential. To this end, camera gimbals are used on an aerial photography drone, alongside a high-quality Hard disk camera to requite smoothen video.

So that is FPV flight in a nutshell. You accept a drone, yous stick a camera on it and fly it by viewing the alive feed. Simple. Now, if yous are interested, I am going to go on to some of the more technical parts (but not too technical!) of what makes up a drone.

How a Drone (Multirotor) Works

This is going to be a brief department on the 'science' behind a drone. Firstly, a 'drone' is technically something that can fly autonomously, but has come to exist a full general term for anything electronic that flies. In the FPV hobby, we ofttimes use the word quadcopter, or 'multirotor'. A multirotor is a vehicle with several 'rotors' i.due east. motors and the almost common ane yous will run into in the skies is a quadcopter – a multirotor with iv motors.

So how does one control a multirotor? A multirotor has iv command points; curlicue, pitch, yaw and thrust. If you accept any experience with aeroplanes/helicopters, you will know what these are but for those yous don't, hither is a simple exercise to become to grips with them.

Hold you manus up, palm downwardly to the ground – your hand is now the multirotor.

  • Ringlet – rock your hand from side to side – this is your roll.
  • Pitch – tilt your hand up and downwards – this is your pitch.
  • Yaw – keeping your palm facing down, rotate your ha left and right – this is your yaw.
  • Thrust/Throttle – elevator your mitt up and you accept your thrust.

You use these four control points in tandem with one another to make your multirotor go in whatever direction you want. Information technology flies similar to how a helicopter does. To motility frontwards you need to have a combination of pitch and thrust..

If you want to get a feel for FPV flying without the adventure of crashing a drone, a great place to first is with an FPV flight simulator.

FPV is not but for quadcopters

FPV using quadcopters is by far the about pop way to fly FPV, but there are alot of fixed wing pilots who attach cameras to more traditional radio command shipping. Only in this guide we volition embrace the basics of FPV from a quadcopter perspective as this is what about people get started with.

Build Your Own or Buy Gear up-To-Fly?

Now, I have given this question a section of its own as it is a very important question; will you build your own quadcopter or buy a pre-fabricated, Ready-To-Fly (RTF) FPV quad? I am going to say straight away that I am biased to building – not just is it practiced fun, you as well get a dandy sense of achievement when you become your own quad upwards in the air flying. That is non to say that ownership a RTF kit is incorrect – you can get some great kits out in that location that will perform fantastically and I am sure you will be happy with your decision.

The crux of the problem for me is that yous will crash – many, many times. Some of these crashes won't lead to annihilation disastrous and you volition just demand to supercede a prop or two. Some of these crashes however (especially as you lot start getting brave!) will result in more serious damage. You may demand to replace a motor, the video transmitter or the flying controller of the quad itself. In these situations, if you oasis't congenital the car yourself, you won't necessarily know how to prepare it. You lot might therefore have to buy an entire kit again – that could get expensive very apace. If you've congenital information technology from scratch though, y'all know the ins and outs of the quad and will therefore be able to identify the problem and solve information technology fairly easily.

And so my advice? Build. If this takes your fancy, I volition now go on to list the anatomy of a drone and you can start to build that drone cognition…

Beefcake of a Drone

So allow's get into some particular on what makes up a quadcopter drone. All the major components of a typical FPV drone are shown in the image below.

A FPV drone can exist broken downward into three main 'parts'; the flight organization, the power system and the FPV system.

  • The flight arrangement consists of the parts that make the quadcopter fly, similar motors and flight controller.
  • The power system consists of the parts that provide electrical power to your drone similar the battery and power distribution board.
  • The FPV arrangement consists of the parts used for the video feed including your camera, video transmitter and goggles.

We will hash out each of these systems in more item.

The Frame

First things first, the 3 systems on a drone accept to be attached to something, known equally the frame. This is the skeleton of the drone and provides non only the strength of the multirotor as a whole, simply as well the final await of the drone. There are so many dissimilar styles and variations of multirotor frames out there, it would be incommunicable to count but all have the same general features. They all desire to exist as strong as possible but likewise as lite as possible (every bit this is evidently the all-time combination). That is why carbon fibre is often used as information technology is generally strong but lightweight.

Frames are also categorised but their size. When I say the size of a frame, I mean the wheelbase which is the diagonal length (in mm) from the centre of 1 motor to the middle of the motor directly diagonal to it. Most FPV frames have a wheelbase of 220mm and under equally the technology grows smarter and smaller.

The Flying System

The flying organization contains everything the multirotor needs to wing. This includes the flight controller, the motors, the electronic speed controllers (ESCs), the radio receiver and the propellers.

The mode the flight organization works is as follows:

  • Airplane pilot moves the sticks on the R/C controller, this is sent to the receiver wirelessly
  • The R/C receiver sends the airplane pilot stick commands to the flight controller
  • The flying controller interprets these commands and calculates what speed each motor should move at and sends this betoken to the ESC
  • The ESC converts this signal to a voltage that it sends to the motor
  • The motor is what produces thrust to actually movement the drone

This process happens hundreds of times each 2d. Lets look at each component in some more detail

The R/C Controller and Receiver

The radio controller is the device the airplane pilot holds in their hands with two joysticks that is used to fly the drone. The radio receiver is the small-scale electronic device that is installed on the drone (and is connected to the flying controller). The controller sends radio signals up to the receiver and the receiver then feeds the information to the flight controller. There is alot of options when it comes to selecting your R/C controller and receiver. Right now the Frsky Taranis radios are by far the most popular in the FPV community.

The Flying Controller

As the name suggests, this piece of equipment controls the flight and so can be idea of equally the 'encephalon' of the drone. The flight controller takes data from 2 inputs and uses them to continue the multirotor stable and directly the drone. These two data inputs come from in-built sensors on the flying controller, and from the pilot via the R/C controller. The sensors tell the flying controller such things every bit the orientation and altitude, and the airplane pilot tells the flight controller in which direction they desire the multirotor to become.

Depending on how deep you lot desire to go, y'all tin can also fine-tune and plan your flight controller to your exact specifications – merely similar you would with a racing motorcar. This way, yous can get the absolute best from your drone.

The Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs)

The ESCs are the components that accept the commands from the flight controller and translate them into power to the motors. The ESC tells the motor to spin faster or slower given the instructions from the pilot. Each motor therefore has a dedicated ESC as each motor is, at whatever given time, moving at a different speed to the others.

The type and size of ESC that is suitable for your drone depends on what power system you are using and which motors y'all are using.

The Motors

The motors are the driving strength of the multirotor and provide the thrust (forth with the propellers). The almost important matter to know in terms of FPV drone motors is how motors are classed.

FPV-Motors

You have many unlike motors of many different sizes but what do they mean? Well, permit's take the ChaosFPV CF2205 2300Kv PRO Motor as an example. This is a 2205 motor with a KV rating of 2300KV. The number 2205 refers to the dimensions of the motor; the motor is 22mm in diameter and has a 5mm stator summit. The taller the motor (bigger stator height), the faster information technology tin can react, while college bore motors give you lot more torque and power, but react slower. The KV rating is divers equally the revolutions per minute (RPM), per volt. Typicaly lower KV motors are best used with bigger props.

The Propellers

The propellers are attached to the motors and provide the needed thrust. There are many different types of props on the marketplace from your traditional 2-blade propellers to the five-blade propellers. Once more, propellers are named in a standard way e.g. 5x3x3. This simply means that you accept a 5 inch propeller with a pitch of 3 inches and there are 3 blades.

The Power System

The power system of a drone comprises the parts the provide ability, and road the power to all the electronics. In a typical FPV quadcopter there are just two components, a power distribution board (PDB) and the bombardment.

The PDB

The power distribution board simply takes the power from the battery and distributes it to the relevant sources. In the simplest form, it is a separate board to which you connect the bombardment and to which you connect the other components of the flight organization (such equally ESCs). Sometimes a PDB will also include some voltage regulators that will output a consistent 5V, or 12V outout to power some of your other electronics. You lot will also find that flight controllers likewise have an in-congenital PDB which ways that yous connect the battery (and ESCs) directly to the flight controller.

The Battery

At present we get to the component that provides the ability to your multirotor – the battery. Drones are by and large powered by lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries which consist of several 'cells'. Each jail cell holds a voltage of 3.7V and by calculation more cells, you add more voltage. For example, a bombardment with 3 cells (notated as 3S) holds a voltage of 11.1V. As alluded to in the 'Motors' section, the speed at which the motor spins is directly correlated to the voltage that is provided. So, in order to make your motor spin faster, you demand more voltage. Yous cannot nevertheless, unfortunately, but whack a battery of 10 cells on your drone to make it go faster – there is always a fine balance between weight and power when picking the right bombardment for you.

The FPV Organization

The FPV system consists of a camera, a video transmitter that broadcasts the video feed back downward to your video goggles on the ground.  To understand the FPV organization, the easiest analogy is to recollect about how tv works as information technology is pretty much the aforementioned thing, just at a much smaller scale. Your drone has a photographic camera on information technology that captures a video. This bespeak is sent to a video transmitter, which broadcasts a signal wirelessly (like a boob tube studio would). The FPV goggles on your quadcopter is like a tv set that will pick upward the betoken. Just to exist specific, the video receiver volition selection up the signal and display information technology on the screen inside the goggles. Most FPV goggles accept an integrated video receiver, or have the power to plug one in via a module bay.

The FPV Camera

The FPV camera is maybe the most important component of whatsoever FPV drone as it is the piece of equipment through which you are transported onto your FPV platform. FPV cameras started off equally CCTV cameras, merely as the hobby has advanced many manufacturers are making custom cameras specificly deisgned for FPV. This means that FPV cameras are designed to have the lowest possible latency (the time it takes for information technology to capture a frame and send it back to you). About FPV cameras practise Not provide Hard disk output however equally this increases the latency of the feed which is disastrous for FPV flying. When you lot are travelling at 80mph+, every millisecond of latency makes a divergence.

The Video Transmitter (VTX)

Without a video transmitter connected to your photographic camera, the camera is completely useless. This is the component that transmits the video feed from the camera wirelessly dorsum to your FPV goggles on the ground.

Smart-Audio-VTX-1.jpg

FPV VTXs come in a range of sizes, powers and features but they are mainly categorised in terms of their transmitting power (in milliwatts, mW). The 2 main powers are 25mW and 200mW transmitters – 200mW is almost mutual amid FPV flight.

You should also note that there are some regulations as to how much power you can employ with your FPV transmitter.  Within the European union, the maximum power you can legally use is 25mW.  If you want to utilize a higher transmit power over this, y'all will need to obtain permission to do so.

The FPV Goggles

Y'all view the alive video feed from your drone with FPG goggles. Technically a video receiver receives the betoken and the screen inside the goggle displays it. But nowdays a FPV reciever is built into, or clips onto just near every FPV goggle so nosotros usualy consider this a single affair.

Headplay-HD

The alive video feed is displayed on a petty screen within the goggles and, just similar virtual reality, you see what the camera sees and you are transported into the skies! Merely like with every other component in multirotor building, there are lots of dissimilar types, styles and brands of FPV goggles. If you lot have the funds, you tin can go for a really high-terminate pair with brilliant screen quality, dual receivers for meliorate reception and special functions such equally DVR adequacy (meaning yous tin can tape what you see). However, you can also go your easily on a very solid pair of goggles for not-that-much money that will practice the chore splendidly for a beginner.

In Summary

FPV flying is therefore but the act of flying your FPV drone with a camera fastened while you watch the live footage and pilot your drone accordingly. Y'all can partake in this activeness lonely (although if you are a beginner, it is recommended that you go out with an experience pilot) or in a grouping. You tin can set up your own race course and race confronting ane another to see who is the ultimate FPV pilot. Information technology gives you a whole different view of the world effectually you and allows you to develop a new skill whilst immersing yourself in a peachy experience.

This is just a short(ish) introduction into FPV flight and then don't let your quest for knowledge terminate here! I would personally recommend going ahead and building your own drone with a DIY kit.  We fabricated the martian quadcopter kit specifically for beginners as information technology includes lots of step-by-step guides to assistance you lot through the process.
